This article documents the preparedness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2019 general election, given its constitutional and statutory mandate. INEC’s responsibility includes, among others, registration of voters, setting election timetable, providing logistics and security for sensitive and non-sensitive materials to polling units, and so on. The paper has not only helped to document INEC preparedness and conduct of elections but also the controversy over the electoral reform, especially whether to use electronic or manual method of voting. The most fundamental aspect of the paper is delineating INEC’s efforts: its effectiveness in the preparation and conduct of the 2019 general election, and the impact on how the elections were generally conducted. Thus, the nature and process for preparation and conduct of an election do have great impact on the success of the election. However, despite the preparation by INEC, the conduct of the 2019 general election was marred by various types of electoral violence across the country. Therefore, with what happened in 2019, how prepared is INEC for the 2023 general election?
